Highway Blockade in Gazipur Again, Passengers in Severe Distress
Garment workers have once again blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Gazipur, demanding jobs and other benefits. The blockade began around 8 AM on Wednesday (October 2), causing traffic to come to a standstill on both sides of the highway, leading to severe disruptions for travelers.
Earlier, agitated workers threw stones at several factories in the Bhogra Chowdhury Bari area, urging workers from those factories to join the protest. Eventually, a number of factories in the surrounding area announced a holiday for the day.
These factories include Belmond, Techno Fiber Limited, Interlink, Euromic Tax Limited, Rua Fashion, and others.
On Tuesday, workers blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway for 11 hours, causing major inconveniences for commuters. Now, they have resumed the blockade at the same location, worsening the situation for office-goers and others traveling for various reasons.
Sarwar Alam, SP of Gazipur Industrial Police, said, "A number of garment workers have blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, protesting for jobs and other demands. The industrial police are on the scene and are in talks with the workers."
