The formal trial proceedings for the genocide committed in July and August have commenced. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been named the chief accused in 54 out of 56 charges.

The trial began on Thursday, October 17, at 11:30 AM, under the leadership of the chairman of the International Crimes Tribunal, Justice Md. Golam Mortuza. Chief Prosecutor Advocate Mohammad Tazul Islam was also present during the session.

The tribunal’s three-judge panel, chaired by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Mojumdar, includes Justice Shafiul Alam Mahmud and retired District and Sessions Judge Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury as members. The judges officially signed their joining papers after arriving at the tribunal on Tuesday, October 15, marking their first day on duty.

This tribunal has been tasked with investigating and prosecuting cases of enforced disappearances, killings, and the genocide carried out during the recent student and public protests under the Awami League government.

It is reported that the Awami League government responded to the protests with indiscriminate killings, resulting in the deaths of around 1,500 people. On August 5, the 15-year rule of Sheikh Hasina’s government came to an end following the mass uprising.

After the interim government, led by Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus, assumed power, it decided to launch a formal investigation and prosecution for the atrocities committed during the July-August genocide.
