Prosecution to Seek Arrest Warrants for Sheikh Hasina and 50 Others
The trial proceedings for the mass killings during the anti-discrimination student movement in July and August officially begin today. As part of the process, the tribunal’s prosecution team will request arrest warrants against 50 individuals, including Awami League President Sheikh Hasina.
Additionally, several top Awami League leaders, already in custody for other cases, will also be formally shown as arrested in connection with the genocide charges.
On October 13, Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Advocate Tajul Islam, mentioned that Interpol’s assistance would be sought to bring back Sheikh Hasina and other fugitives.
He further stated that after the judges were appointed, the prosecution would file applications this week, not only for arrest warrants but also for travel bans against the accused in the July massacre.
The International Crimes Tribunal was formed on October 14, with Additional Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumdar appointed as the chairman. The tribunal includes two other members: Additional Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and retired District and Sessions Judge Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
Earlier, on September 5, Advocate Mohammad Tajul Islam, a Supreme Court lawyer, was appointed Chief Prosecutor of the tribunal. The prosecution team also includes five other prosecutors: Md. Mizanul Islam, Gazi Monowar Hossain Tamim, B.M. Sultan Mahmud, Abdullah Al Noman, and Md. Saimum Reza Talukder.
