Media Enjoying Unprecedented Freedom: Chief Advisor
The media in Bangladesh is currently enjoying unprecedented freedom, remarked the Chief Advisor of the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus. However, he noted that a flood of misinformation is spreading on social media.
On Wednesday (January 29), he made these comments during a meeting with a delegation from the Open Society Foundations (OSF) at the state guest house, Jamuna.
The delegation, led by OSF Chairman Alex Soros and President Binaifer Nowrojee, met with the Chief Advisor and expressed their support for the interim government’s reform initiatives.
The Open Society Foundations also expressed interest in assisting Bangladesh in its crucial transition from a Least Developed Country (LDC), which was welcomed by the Chief Advisor.
Dr. Muhammad Yunus stated, "We must think about how to complete this transition process smoothly, without any obstacles."
During the meeting, Alex Soros praised Dr. Yunus for leading the country through a complex period in history and for undertaking necessary reforms to restore institutions and rebuild the economy.
The Chief Advisor emphasized that the student-led mass uprising had created a "tremendous opportunity" to set a new course for the nation. The discussions covered various topics, including the July uprising, interim justice for victims, economic reforms, media, recovery of stolen assets, the new cyber security law, ways to improve governance, and the Rohingya crisis.
Alex Soros stated, "We will explore ways to support your efforts in these areas."
The Chief Advisor thanked OSF for its support and urged the foundation to help spread news about the unprecedented student-led uprising.
Furthermore, he called on OSF to assist in recovering approximately $234 billion allegedly siphoned out of the country during Sheikh Hasina’s 16-year rule.
