Expressing dissatisfaction on the electoral symbol Shapla Koli (Water Lily Bud) allotted by the Election Commission (EC), National Citizen Party (NCP) said they will not accept it.
"We do not accept the Shapla Koli symbol. We want the water lily. We are not satisfied with the inclusion of ‘Shapla Koli’ in the EC's list," said the party's Joint Member Secretary Zahirul Islam Musa in an immediate reaction on Thursday.
EC included Shapla Koli in its revised list of 119 electoral symbols. A gazette notification, signed by EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed, was released earlier on Thursday.
To incorporate Shapla Koli, a symbol sought by the National Citizen Party (NCP), EC has amended the Election Conduct Rules.
The notification stated that the amendment was made under the authority granted by Article 94 of the 1972 Constitution.
It further mentioned that sub-rule (1) of rule 9 under the Election Conduct Rules, 2008 has been replaced with a new sub-rule, allowing any contesting candidate—subject to availability—to be allotted one of the listed symbols, except those suspended under clause 20.
When asked whether they would accept the newly added symbol if allotted, Musa said, “Our desired symbol is the Shapla. We want the Shapla, not the bud.”
He added that the party would announce its formal stance once the EC officially allocates election symbols, but reaffirmed that NCP expects to be given the Shapla symbol.
