A Hindu youth was lynched on Thursday night and his body was burnt after being hung from a tree branch near his workplace in the Dubaliapara area under Bhaluka upazila in Mymensingh, allegedly for hurting religious sentiments by making derogatory remarks about the Prophet.
The victim, 25-year-old Dipu Chandra Das, was a worker at the Pioneer Knit Composite Factory in Bhaluka and a resident of Tarakanda Upazila.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, the violence erupted on Thursday night following allegations that Dipu had made derogatory comments about the Prophet. As the rumors spread, an angry mob gathered on the factory premises. When Dipu exited the factory at approximately 9:00 PM, the mob intercepted him and beat him to death.
In a disturbing escalation, the mob transported the body to the Dhaka–Mymensingh Highway, where they hung it from a tree and set it on fire. The group also blocked the highway, causing significant traffic disruptions.
The incident has sparked outrage across the country. Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus issued a strong condemnation of the murder on Friday.
In separate statements, the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council and the Sree Sree Janmastami Udjapan Parishad Bangladesh strongly condemned the lynching and demanded swift justice for the victim.
