Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali on Thursday reassured the public that voting is proceeding in a peaceful and orderly manner, dismissing months of speculation regarding potential unrest.

Speaking to the media after casting his ballot at the Mohammadpur Preparatory School and College centre this morning, the Commissioner noted that the reality on the ground contradicts the persistent rumours that had shadowed the lead-up to the 13th National Parliament Election and the concurrent constitutional Referendum early Thursday.

“For the last six months, we have heard rumours that the election would not be held or that various incidents would occur,” Sajjat Ali said.

“But as you can see, voting is taking place smoothly. There is no problem anywhere, and there is no cause for apprehension.”

The DMP chief expressed his personal pride in participating in what he described as a "historic" election, marking the first time in 17 years that many citizens are truly exercising their right to vote.

He noted that the transparent and neutral environment has even led rival political parties to publicly state their willingness to accept the eventual results—a sentiment he believes is natural given the fairness of the process.

Reflecting on the stark contrast with past experiences, Sajjat Ali shared a personal anecdote from the 2018 election.

At that time, while attempting to vote at the same centre, he was told at the gate that his vote had already been cast, forcing him to return home without exercising his franchise.

"After a long 17 years, people are finally exercising their citizen's rights. I am happy that I have participated in this vote today," he remarked, expressing hope that the peaceful atmosphere would continue through the counting phase and final results announcement.
