Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Thursday placed a BDT 9.38 lakh crore national budget for the fiscal year 2026-27 (FY27) in the National Parliament, mapping out a macro-strategy heavily targeted at market stabilization, manufacturing self-reliance, and aggressive fiscal reform.

This marks the first national financial blueprint of the current BNP government since it assumed office following the February 12 general elections.

The sweeping tariff alterations, duty rollbacks, and protective fiscal measures announced in the budget speech are set to significantly shift the retail landscape, causing retail prices of various essential commodities, healthcare materials, and tech devices to fluctuate.

What Will Cost Less (Prices Likely to Go Down)

In a massive relief push for healthcare, the digital economy, green energy, and everyday consumers, the proposed budget slashes import duties, VAT, and administrative taxes across several major sectors.

Healthcare & Life-Saving Materials: Kidney dialysis equipment, cardiac stents (heart rings), intraocular lenses for eye surgeries, cancer medicines, Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API), other life-saving medicines, medical equipment, and specialized assistive devices for persons with disabilities.

Technology & Digital Inclusion: Laptop and desktop computers, computer printers, computer monitors, generic computer accessories, Solid State Drives (SSDs), Point of Sale (POS) machines, automated teller machines (ATMs), CCTV cameras, and smart banking cards. Notably, the total withdrawal of the SIM card tax will also lower mobile activation costs.

Green Energy & Electric Transport: Electric Vehicles (EVs) valued up to USD 50,000, Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) up to 2,000 cc, electric buses, electric trucks, e-bikes, and EV charging stations. This extends to solar panels/photovoltaic cells, solar inverters, calcium battery packs, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and solar panel mounting structures.

Daily Commodities & Agriculture: Baby food, all varieties of spices, all types of dates, fertilizers, veterinary medicines, insecticides, pesticides, alongside poultry, dairy, and fish feed.

Home Appliances & Lifestyle Goods: Electric, induction, and infrared cookers, water purifiers, water heaters, irons, cosmetic and beauty items, hair care products, jewelry, musical instruments (including pianos, guitars, and violins), and cinematography cameras or projector accessories.

Locally Manufactured Electronics: Due to domestic industrial tax cuts, the prices of locally produced smartphones, refrigerators, freezers, and washing machines are expected to fall.

Public Infrastructure: Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) and mortuary refrigerators.

What Will Cost More (Prices Likely to Go Up)

Conversely, to discourage luxury spending, maximize revenue, and protect domestic manufacturing, the government has increased supplementary duties, regulatory tariffs, and taxes on several imported and luxury commodities.

Sin Taxes & Luxury Items: Cigarettes, tobacco products, nicotine pouches, and all locally produced alcoholic beverages in Bangladesh.

Imported Vehicles & Appliances: Mid-range passenger vehicles with engine capacities between 1,200 cc and 1,600 cc, and completely built-up imported washing machines.

Imported Foodstuffs & Commodities: Imported honey, coffee, cashew nuts, toys, mayonnaise, edible oils, and processed potato chips.

Construction, Housing & Heavy Industry: Imported tiles, toilets, basins, paints, sanitary fixtures, imported copper tubes, imported cold-rolled and coated steel coils/sheets, and Mild Steel (MS) products.

Industrial & Retail Components: Imported transformers (up to 1 kVA capacity), imported DC motors (up to 1,200 watts capacity), and imported leather or leather goods.

The proposed pricing adjustments are aimed at curbing inflation for everyday citizens while creating an environment that favors local production over import reliance.
