Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Friday that Bangladesh has successfully prevented any illegal border push-ins, citing the heightened vigilance of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) along the nation’s frontiers.

Speaking to reporters after an event marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium, the minister emphasized that the practice of pushing individuals across borders without proper verification is neither appropriate nor internationally recognized.

"If India has a list of Bangladeshi nationals staying there illegally, it can provide the information through diplomatic channels or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs," he stated, adding that the government would verify such claims through due process and handle repatriations strictly through established legal procedures if nationality is confirmed.

Addressing recent reports from the West Bengal Legislative Assembly claiming that 10,000 people were pushed back, the minister clarified that the Bangladesh government possesses no documentary evidence or verified statistics to support these assertions.

He further suggested that the recent discourse surrounding push-in activities might be influenced by a political agenda following the recent elections in the Indian state of West Bengal.

Praising the BGB, he noted that the force remains on maximum alert and has effectively thwarted attempts by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) to push individuals into Bangladesh.

Providing an update on the murder case of Shaheed Osman Hadi, the Home Minister noted that three principal suspects have been arrested by Indian law enforcement in Bongaon, West Bengal and that judicial proceedings have already commenced there.

He confirmed that Bangladesh has formally initiated the process to secure the return of the accused under the bilateral extradition treaty.

"We have sent the necessary legal documents and warrants to the Indian authorities. We are hopeful of their early handover to Bangladesh," he said.

Additionally, the minister addressed the status of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed, confirming that he is currently in the custody of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Federal Police following his arrest.

The UAE authorities had requested the necessary legal documentation within a 30-day window; however, the Bangladesh government finalized all institutional requirements within three days.

These documents were subsequently transmitted to the UAE through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and formally handed over by the Bangladesh Embassy in Abu Dhabi a few days ago.

The government is now awaiting a final response from the UAE regarding the next steps in the process.
