President Mohammed Shahabuddin has formally stepped down from office, putting an end to intense speculation surrounding his tenure.

To announce the formal acceptance of the head of state’s resignation, Speaker of Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmad convened an emergency press conference scheduled for 5 pm on Friday at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

The update was confirmed on Friday afternoon through an official press statement released by Public Relations Sub-Branch-1 of the Parliament Secretariat.

According to the press release, signed by Assistant Director of the Parliament Secretariat Md Rashed Mizan, the urgent media briefing following the acceptance of the president’s resignation would take place at 5 pm on Friday inside the oath-taking room, situated on Level 1 of Parliament's East Block.

Mohammed Shahabuddin took the oath of office as the 22nd President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023.

He secured the presidency uncontested after receiving the nomination from the Awami League, with his five-year constitutional mandate originally set to run through April 2028.

His resignation comes in the wake of significant political turmoil after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stepped down and fled the country on August 5, 2024, following a mass popular uprising.

In the aftermath of the movement, numerous political parties persistently pressed for the president's departure, organizing multiple street demonstrations to demand his resignation.
