Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain extended state support to the family of Kanika Mondal, a 35-year-old mother who died at Ibn Sina Hospital in Dhaka following severe medical complications after childbirth.

Kanika, wife of Prashanta Mondal from Baghutia village under Baliakandi upazila in Rajbari district, passed away at the hospital on Thursday evening.

Upon receiving news of her death, the health minister initially went to the hospital in Dhaka before traveling to Baliakandi on Friday morning to meet the grieving family at their residence and convey his personal condolences.

Family members recounted that Kanika was originally admitted to a private maternity clinic in Faridpur approximately three months ago for a cesarean section. Following the procedure, she developed persistent, acute abdominal pain.

Her health steadily deteriorated, prompting her transfer to Ibn Sina Hospital in Dhaka for specialized intervention. Advanced diagnostics, including CT scans, revealed foreign materials lodged in her abdomen.

Surgeons subsequently performed an emergency operation to extract the object, which her family described as a substantial accumulation of surgical gauze and bandage materials left behind from her previous surgery.

Despite the surgical removal, Kanika succumbed to her condition while undergoing ongoing treatment.

During his conversation with the bereaved family, Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain assured them that the government would provide all necessary aid.

He declared that if an official probe confirms medical negligence or professional malpractice contributed to the fatality, a full investigation will be conducted to hold those responsible accountable under the law.

The minister further stated that the government is taking swift measures to resolve systemic deficiencies within the national healthcare system, emphasizing that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman remains deeply committed to reforming the health sector.

Kanika's premature death has triggered widespread grief across her village and the local community.

The minister's visit was accompanied by Rajbari Deputy Commissioner Afroza Parvin, Civil Surgeon Dr. S.M. Masud, Additional Deputy Commissioner Tariq-ul Hasan, the Baliakandi Upazila Nirbahi Officer, and other local government officials.
