A massive wave of people descended upon the Central Shaheed Minar to pay their respects to the heroic martyrs of the Language Movement on the occasion of Amar Ekushey, the Great Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day.

By the early hours of Saturday (February 21), thousands of people—barefoot and wearing black badges as a symbol of mourning—gathered in the Azimpur and Dhaka University areas.

Carrying bouquets of blood-red palash and pomegranate flowers, citizens from all walks of life paid their humble tributes to the rhythmic, somber tune of the iconic song: "Amar Bhaiyer Rokte Rangano Ekushey February, Ami Ki Bhulite Pari".

State Tributes and Formalities
The state ceremonies began at the stroke of midnight. President Mohammed Shahabuddin placed the first floral wreath at 12:01 AM, followed by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at 12:08 AM.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by members of his cabinet during the ceremony.

Tributes were subsequently paid on behalf of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Zia family.

Once the formal state proceedings concluded, the Shaheed Minar was opened to the general public, turning the entire area into a sea of people.

From political activists to infants in their parents' arms and elderly citizens in wheelchairs, the destination for all was the sacred altar of the martyrs.

Political and Institutional Presence
A wide array of political and social leaders joined the observance:

Opposition: Leader of the Opposition and Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman led leaders of the 11-party alliance in paying respects.

National Citizen Party (NCP): Opposition Chief Whip and NCP Convener Nahid Islam also placed a wreath.

Institutional Heads: The Chiefs of the three services, members of the judiciary, and the Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University offered their floral tributes.

Active Groups: Significant presence was noted from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Gono Odhikar Parishad, and the AB Party. Members of Chhatra Dal, Chhatra Union, and Chhatra Front filled the air with spirited slogans.

A Generation Inspired by 'July'
As the day progressed, the crowds only grew. Long queues stretched from Shahbagh to the Shaheed Minar, primarily composed of students from Dhaka University, Jagannath University, and various city colleges.

A notable highlight of this year's observance was the massive participation of the younger generation under the banners of "July Oikkya" and "July Mancha." Children, dressed in outfits adorned with Bengali alphabets and carrying the national flag, were seen walking hand-in-hand with their parents toward the monument.

The spirit of the July 2024 Revolution seemed to blend seamlessly with the historic consciousness of 1952, creating a unique atmosphere of renewed patriotism.
