The government has assured the public that there are sufficient fuel reserves in the country, with significant shipments scheduled to arrive from various nations throughout April.
Monir Hossain Chowdhury, Joint Secretary (Operations Division) of the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, shared the update during a press conference on the overall fuel situation held at the Secretariat on Monday (March 30).
Import Schedule and Supply Certainty
Outlining the import plan for the coming month, the Joint Secretary confirmed the arrival of immediate shipments. "Two cargoes are arriving—one on March 30 and another on April 3. These are confirmed and consist of approximately 54,600 metric tons," he stated.
In addition to these shipments, 7,000 tons will be supplied by India’s Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL).
Chowdhury further noted, "We will also receive two cargoes from Malaysia's BSP and one from Unipac, totaling an additional 150,000 metric tons. There is no cause for concern; we can assure the public that our stocks are adequate."
Priority for Agricultural Irrigation
Addressing concerns regarding fuel for irrigation, Chowdhury emphasized that clear directives have been issued to prioritize the agricultural sector.
"Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNO) and Upazila Agriculture Officers maintain lists of farmers. Instructions have been given to ensure farmers receive diesel with the highest priority based on those lists," he said.
He added that no reports of shortages in agriculture have been received from District Commissioners thus far, inviting journalists to report any specific issues for immediate intervention.
Potential Conservation Measures
When questioned about government plans for energy conservation, the Joint Secretary mentioned that they are observing strategies used by neighboring countries. These include:
"These options are under serious consideration. Any formal decisions regarding these measures will be announced in due course," Chowdhury concluded.
