Senior journalist Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury was prevented from traveling to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah by immigration authorities at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon (April 15) when the veteran journalist arrived at the airport to board a Saudia flight to Jeddah. Despite completing initial check-in procedures, he was stopped during the immigration process and barred from leaving the country.

According to airport sources, Mr. Chowdhury’s departure was blocked due to multiple pending cases against him related to the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. His passport had reportedly been flagged on an immigration watch list.

As a result, he was offloaded from the aircraft at approximately 2:10 PM. A General Diary (GD) was subsequently filed regarding the incident before he returned to his residence.

Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury is a prominent figure in the Bangladeshi media industry and currently serves as the Editor of The Daily Observer.
