The government has taken steps to modernize and strengthen Bangladesh's maritime and coastal security by inducting advanced surveillance helicopters into the Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) fleet.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed recently announced the initiative, reaffirming the government's commitment to transforming the Coast Guard into a full-fledged, modern force through the addition of advanced vessels, drones, surveillance systems, and increased manpower.

Enhancing Operational Capability
The induction of helicopters is expected to significantly bolster the force's ability to combat drug smuggling, human trafficking, illegal fishing, and piracy.

These aircraft will be equipped with sophisticated sensors, radar systems, and real-time data transmission technology.

This aerial advantage will allow for the rapid detection of suspicious vessels and provide instantaneous intelligence to patrol ships and coastal units, increasing both the speed and precision of maritime operations.

Integrated Maritime Surveillance
The government is also moving forward with a comprehensive "Maritime Surveillance System." This network aims to provide 24/7 digital monitoring of coastal waters, major shipping lanes, and seaports by integrating:

• Satellite technology
• Radar stations
• Drone surveillance
• Aerial patrols under a central command structure

Infrastructure and Fleet Expansion
As part of the ongoing modernization, several key projects are currently underway:

New Vessels: Construction of a Multi-Role Response Vessel and two Offshore Patrol Vessels is progressing rapidly with funding from JICA.

High-Speed Boats: A contract was recently signed with Khulna Shipyard for bulletproof high-speed boats to strengthen coastal patrols.

Domestic Production: A project is active to replace nine aging ships with nine new patrol vessels built in local shipyards.

Maintenance: Plans have been finalized to establish a modern dockyard in Gazaria, Munshiganj, for ship repairs and maintenance.

Human Resources and Regional Standards
To support this technological leap, the government plans to increase the Coast Guard's manpower to approximately 10,000 personnel.

Experts believe that achieving "Maritime Domain Awareness" through these integrated systems will elevate the Bangladesh Coast Guard to a strong regional standard, ensuring more efficient disaster management and search-and-rescue operations across the Bay of Bengal.
