The government has undertaken extensive initiatives to promote renewable energy to ensure sustainable energy security.

In continuation of this, a gazette notification has been issued announcing a special incentive package for installing rooftop solar power systems equipped with batteries.

In a message on Tuesday (September 1), the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources stated that, taking into account current market rates and tender prices received by the Power Division, the generation cost for rooftop solar power with batteries has been capped at a maximum of 8 Taka per unit.

As part of the special incentive, adding a 20 percent profit margin and an 11.25 percent premium to this generation cost brings the finalized tariff to 10.50 Taka per unit.

If a consumer manages to install such a solar system at a cost lower than the stipulated estimate, the saved amount will be treated as their additional dividend.

According to the Net Metering Guidelines 2025, consumers who install rooftop solar systems by February 28, 2027, and supply their surplus electricity to the national grid after meeting their own consumption needs, will receive 10.50 Taka per unit for the electricity fed into the grid for the subsequent three years, running until February 28, 2030.

Power distribution utilities will maintain consumer data, record the volume of electricity supplied to the national grid, and manage information related to tariffs and incentives.

Incentive payments will be credited directly to consumers' bank or mobile banking accounts and can under no circumstances be disbursed in cash. Systems installed after February 28, 2027, will not be eligible for this incentive.

The solar panels, batteries, inverters, meters, and related equipment used in setting up the solar systems must comply with the technical standards specified by the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) and the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA).

Policy support for these installations will be provided through the One-Stop Service Center already established by the Power Division.

Similar assistance will also be available at all district and upazila-level offices under the purview of power distribution utilities.
