
The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has undertaken various initiatives to establish different solar power projects with a total capacity of 689 megawatts across the country using its own funds by 2030.
A BPDB official stated that they have formulated the Preliminary Development Project Proposal (PDPP), conducted feasibility studies, and finalized the Development Project Proposal (DPP) for installing grid-connected solar power panels. Land has also been selected for setting up the grid-connected solar panels.
The PDB has already sent a detailed project proposal for a 442-megawatt solar power project in Rampal to the ministry for approval. The project is expected to be implemented by 2030.
The Infrastructure Investment Facilitation Company (IIFC) has conducted a feasibility study for setting up a 222-megawatt grid-connected solar photovoltaic power plant in Sonagazi, Feni. Work is underway to implement this project by 2028.
The BPDB official mentioned that the state-owned power development board has already installed 688 kilowatt-peak of rooftop solar power systems using its own financing from November 2025 to September 12 of this year.
Additionally, another 4,195 kilowatt-peak of solar power systems are scheduled to be operational by December of this year.
The official added that tenders were invited two years ago to establish 17 solar power projects on the board's own buildings and land using self-funding.
According to BPDB sources, the rooftop solar power system with a capacity of 170 kilowatt-peak at the Engineering Academy in Kaptai has been generating electricity since November 2025.
A 130 kilowatt-peak system at the Chittagong Training Center started in June of this year, and a 120 kilowatt-peak system at the Rajshahi Training Center was launched on September 5.
Furthermore, a 268 kilowatt-peak rooftop solar power system was launched at the Khulna Power Plant on September 12.
Meanwhile, the PDB is working to launch a total of 4,195 kilowatt-peak capacity grid-connected solar power projects between September and December of this year.
According to BPDB data, these self-funded projects include 300 kilowatt-peak at the Siddhirganj Power Station, 73 kilowatt-peak at Katakhali, 65 kilowatt-peak at the Baghabari Power Station, 190 kilowatt-peak at the Bhola 225 MW Power Plant, 230 kilowatt-peak at the Cox's Bazar Training Center, 332 kilowatt-peak at the Kaptai Hydroelectric Power Plant, 1,300 kilowatt-peak of rooftop solar power on the buildings of the Ghorashal Power Station, 187 kilowatt-peak in Chapainawabganj, 390 kilowatt-peak at the Chittagong Power Station, 122 kilowatt-peak at the Dohazari-Kaliapaik 100 MW Power Plant, 750 kilowatt-peak at the Shikalbaha Power Plant, 86 kilowatt-peak at the Hathazari 100 MW Power Plant, and 170 kilowatt-peak at the Ghorashal Training Center.
BPDB Chairman Engineer Rezaul Karim stated that these solar power projects will be constructed using the board's own funds on unused roofs and land owned by the BPDB. He mentioned that the implementation of these projects will help fulfill Bangladesh's climate commitments, reduce pressure on the environment, and encourage individuals to install solar panels on their own rooftops.
