A devastating explosion, suspected to be caused by a gas leak, has left ten members of a family with severe burn injuries in the Kamarpara area of Uttara, Dhaka, early Friday morning.

The incident occurred on the second floor of a residential building, causing significant structural damage that led to the collapse of walls on the ground and first floors.

The victims were rushed to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka for emergency medical treatment.

Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman, a resident surgeon at the institute, confirmed the gravity of their conditions: "Sonia suffered 100 percent burns, while Enayet sustained 45 percent burns."

Other family members, including a three-year-old child, also sustained serious injuries ranging from 7 to 32 percent burns. Those in the most critical condition are currently undergoing intensive care, while others remain under close observation.

The family involved includes Md Rubel, 30; his pregnant wife Sonia Akter, 25; their daughter Roza, 3; Sonia’s elder sister Ria, 27; Rubel’s cousin Enayet Ali, 32; Enayet’s wife Delera Khatun, 28; their son Junayed, 10; Enayet’s younger brother Habib, 30; his niece Ayesha Khatun, 19; and Abu Kalam Rubel, 35.

Local relatives reported hearing a powerful blast in the early hours of the morning.

"After hearing the blast, we rushed out and saw that parts of the ground floor and first-floor walls had collapsed," said Sajed Matabbur, a relative of the victims.

Authorities and emergency services are continuing to investigate the exact cause of the accumulation of gas that triggered the explosion.
