Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has apprehended an Indian national, identified as 32-year-old Md. Ali Hossain, for illegally crossing the border into the Barlekha upazila of Moulvibazar.

Following his arrest, Hossain was sent to jail via a Moulvibazar court on Thursday afternoon.

He was originally taken into custody during a special BGB operation conducted in the dead of night on June 17.

The detainee, Md. Ali Hossain, is a resident of South Kefti village under Patharkandi Police Station in the Karimganj district of Assam, India.

According to BGB sources, the operation at the BOC Tila BOP area was initiated following intelligence reports regarding the illegal infiltration of drug smugglers across the border.

BGB personnel apprehended Hossain approximately three kilometers inside Bangladeshi territory, near the Madhabkunda area, close to border pillar 1389/M. During the arrest, various Indian identification documents were seized from his possession.

In initial questioning, Ali Hossain confessed to being involved in cross-border smuggling, although he claimed that he had entered Bangladesh illegally for the purpose of a mobile phone display business.

Lieutenant Colonel Ataur Rahman, commander of the BGB-52 Battalion, stated that preliminary evidence confirmed the detainee's involvement in cross-border smuggling. Following the necessary legal procedures, he was handed over to the Barlekha Police Station.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Barlekha Police Station, Md. Moniruzzaman Khan, confirmed the development, noting, "The accused handed over by the BGB has been sent to jail through the court. He is involved in smuggling. He frequently travels back and forth to Bangladesh illegally."
