Two under-trial prisoners held at Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj passed away at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Wednesday night.

The deceased were identified as Mohammad Iftekhar Mahmud (36), son of Mahbub Alam hailing from Pirerbagh in Mirpur and Mohammad Tofozzal Hossain Palash (38), son of Ali Hossain hailing from the Bagbari area under Darus Salam Police Station in the capital.

Prison Guard Aminul Islam stated that Iftekhar suddenly took ill inside the correctional facility on September 19 and was immediately moved to DMCH for treatment in the medicine department, where he breathed his last at approximately 9:00 pm on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Prison Guard Masum reported that Tofozzal Hossain Palash abruptly fell ill and lost consciousness inside the jail on Wednesday night, prompting his transfer to DMCH around 10:30 pm, where the attending physician declared him dead at roughly 11:30 pm.

Correctional authorities have not disclosed the specific charges or cases under which the two individuals were incarcerated.

Inspector Md Habibur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the DMCH police outpost, confirmed that both bodies have been placed in the hospital morgue pending post-mortem examinations.
