Law enforcement authorities have formally filed charges against four individuals, including two male adolescents, in connection with the killing of 13-year-old Ishiat Shahriar Opratim, the son of Comilla University educator Dr. Nahida Begum.
Police submitted the formal charge sheet to a Cumilla court on October 20, as confirmed on Thursday by Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Md Lutfar Rahman.
Two among the accused have been identified as Saiful Islam Tuhin, 19, and Md Siam, 19, whereas the remaining two suspects are underage minors.
As outlined in the indictment, Opratim was slain after being struck on the head with a bamboo pole when he fought back against an effort to steal his cellular phone.
Tuhin and the two teenagers played direct roles in the murder itself, whereas Siam participated in orchestrating the plot, the charge sheet detailed.
Based on police findings, Tuhin lured Opratim to an isolated, wooded hillside location in Sananda, close to the Lalmai Hills, during the afternoon of September 18.
When the perpetrators attempted to grab his mobile phone, the schoolboy offered resistance.
In the course of the resulting scuffle, Tuhin—followed by the two minors—hit him on the head using a bamboo stick, resulting in his death, the investigation revealed.
Opratim, the sole son of Firoz Shahriar and Nahida Begum, an associate professor in the Department of Bangla at Comilla University, was discovered deceased in a jungle within the Kotbari locality of Cumilla Sadar Dakkhin upazila on September 19.
He was a Seventh Grade student at Border Guard Public School.
Opratim had departed his residence at approximately 3:30 pm on September 18 carrying his mother’s iPhone to capture photos alongside his peers, but failed to return home.
