Bangladesh has reached an unprecedented milestone in its history, with expatriate workers sending home $30 billion in remittances during the current 2024-25 fiscal year, up to June 28. This marks the highest amount of foreign earnings in any single fiscal year for the nation.
According to a Bangladesh Bank report updated on Sunday, June 29, expatriates remitted $2.54 billion in the first 28 days of June alone. At an exchange rate of BDT 122 per dollar, this translates to over BDT 30,978 crore.
Of the total remittances, $1.61 billion came through private banks. State-owned banks facilitated $556.5 million, two specialized banks received $361.2 million, and foreign banks accounted for $5.37 million.
The $30 billion remitted by expatriates up to June 28 of the current fiscal year represents a significant 26.5% increase compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. This figure also surpasses the previous record of $24.77 billion, which was achieved in the 2020-21 fiscal year.
Earlier this year, remittances also saw strong performances in individual months: $2.19 billion in January, $2.52 billion in February, a record-breaking $3.28 billion in March, $2.75 billion in April, and $2.97 billion in May.
