The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has officially confirmed that the Bangladesh government has requested a new IMF-supported programme, even as crucial discussions continue regarding the country’s comprehensive reform agenda and policy priorities.
In an official statement released on Wednesday, IMF Mission Chief for Bangladesh Ivo Krznar disclosed that the IMF staff are currently actively engaged in high-level talks with the Bangladeshi authorities regarding the proposed financial and structural programme.
Detailing the current state of engagement, Krznar stated:
“The Bangladeshi authorities have requested a new IMF supported program. IMF staff are in discussions with the authorities on their reform agenda and policy priorities.”
The Mission Chief further emphasized that the international financial institution remains deeply committed to partnering with Bangladesh to help navigate its ongoing economic hurdles and maintain macroeconomic and financial stability.
Reaffirming this collaborative commitment, Krznar added:
“The IMF remains a committed partner to Bangladesh in its efforts to secure lasting macroeconomic and financial stability, strengthen resilience, and support strong, inclusive growth.”
This key economic development emerges at a time when Bangladesh is continuously executing targeted fiscal, monetary, and structural reforms.
These measures are designed to stabilize the national economy while simultaneously addressing intense pressures on foreign exchange reserves, rising inflation and vulnerabilities within the broader financial sector.
Bangladesh has already been actively implementing various stringently monitored reform measures under its existing IMF loan programme, which was initially approved back in 2023.
