Marking the golden jubilee of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam’s passing, the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) operating under the High Commission of India in Dhaka is staging a commemorative cultural gala titled 'Nazrul Sandhya' at the Chhayanaut Auditorium in the capital on Thursday.

The program features artistic contributions from celebrated Nazrul Sangeet vocalist Fatema Tuz Zohra, veteran Bangladeshi actor and recitation artist Jayanto Chattopadhyay, and distinguished Manipuri choreographer and movement practitioner Samina Husain Prema, who leads the Bhabna Dance School.

This collaborative showcase weaves together musical compositions, poetic recitation, and classical choreography to illuminate the enduring philosophy of Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Dinesh Trivedi, the High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh, will attend as the chief guest, sharing the dais with eminent Nazrul interpreters, prominent cultural figures, senior government officials, and delegates from diverse artistic institutions.

In an official release, the High Commission noted that the tribute underscores the perennial resonance of Nazrul’s literary and musical corpus while celebrating the interconnected civilizational legacy shared between India and Bangladesh.

Among the headliners, Fatima Tuz Zohra stands out as an eminent vocalist and cultural stalwart widely celebrated as a premier custodian of Nazrul Geeti.

Her expressive and sonorous interpretations of the national poet's catalog have instrumental in safeguarding, mainstreaming, and transmitting this sonic heritage to younger cohorts.

Her decades of devotion have earned her high-profile accolades, including the Ekushey Padak in 2006 and the Bangla Academy Nazrul Award in 2026.

Sharing the bill is Samina Husain Prema, an acclaimed exponent of classical Manipuri choreography and cultural instruction who honed her craft at Chhayanaut and under Guru Kalavati Devi, holding academic credentials from the University of Dhaka and Rabindra Bharati University.

Having established the Bhabna dance collective in 2007, she has conceptualized acclaimed theatrical works such as Bhanushingher Padabol, Shakuntala, and Rhythm of Bangladesh.

Enlisted with Bangladesh Television since 2000, she has collected numerous domestic and international honors while flying the national flag at cultural summits across India, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, China, Myanmar, South Korea and Russia, cementing her impact on classical dance promotion and cultural diplomacy.

The roster is completed by Jayanto Chattopadhyay, a towering figure in Bangladeshi performance arts whose career in acting and verse recitation spans more than fifty years.

An alumnus of the University of Calcutta where he earned an English Literature degree, he is celebrated for layered celluloid performances in Tareque Masud’s Matir Moina and Ghetuputra Komola, alongside memorable small-screen turns in Trishna and Karagar, while commanding widespread acclaim as a master of spoken-word art.
