Following the demise of veteran Bollywood actor Nana Patekar, police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. Authorities have registered an 'unnatural death' case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
The development was reported by Indian media outlet Ei Samay on Friday (October 9).
Citing police sources, the report stated that Nana Patekar was brought dead to Manipal Hospital in Bambolim from his residence at Ocean Park in Dona Paula, Goa.
According to police, the Panaji Police Station was alerted by hospital authorities on Thursday morning (October 8). The hospital confirmed that the actor was rushed to the emergency department from his Dona Paula residence, but was declared brought dead on arrival—a detail officially documented in hospital records.
Following the notification, police registered an Unnatural Death (UD) case under Section 194 of the BNSS. The provision governs cases involving unexpected, sudden, or suspicious deaths to facilitate formal inquiries and necessary legal proceedings.
Sub-Inspector Nitin Naik of the Goa Police is leading the investigation. The investigative team is currently collecting facts, liaising with attending physicians, and speaking with members of the late actor's family.
Because the veteran actor was declared dead on arrival, standard medico-legal procedures were initiated. The body was sent to the Goa Medical College and Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Police emphasized that the exact cause of death will be determined once the autopsy report and related forensic details are made available, cautioning against speculative conclusions in the interim.
Authorities clarified that registering an 'unnatural death' case does not automatically imply foul play or criminal activity. Medical professionals previously stated that the actor suffered a fatal cardiac arrest, noting that he had a history of heart ailments and was on regular medication.
According to Dr. Shekhar Salkar of Manipal Hospital, Nana Patekar fell ill at his Goa residence in the early hours of Thursday. At around 2:30 AM, he texted a friend stating he was feeling unwell and experiencing pain on the left side of his body.
However, the friend did not see the message immediately. Upon arriving at the actor's home around 4:00 AM, the friend found him sweating profusely and struggling to breathe.
Emergency medical services were summoned, and an ambulance crew alongside doctors from Manipal Hospital rushed to the scene. CPR was administered at the residence before he was transported to the hospital.
Despite resuscitation efforts, doctors were unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead due to cardiac arrest at 5:20 AM.
