Regional tensions surged as Israel launched a series of retaliatory airstrikes across Lebanon, following a significant rocket and drone offensive by Hezbollah targeting a military base near Haifa in northern Israel.

Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the strike, stating it was a retaliatory measure for the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The group characterized the operation as an effort to defend Lebanese territory and its people.

In response, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted heavy aerial bombardments focused on southern Beirut, various southern villages, and the Bekaa Valley.

The Israeli military stated it was targeting senior Hezbollah leadership and issued urgent evacuation orders for residents in more than 50 specific areas across Lebanon.

The escalation has drawn sharp criticism from within Lebanon.

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned Hezbollah’s actions as “irresponsible,” warning that the group—which operates independently of the state—is placing the nation’s security at grave risk.

Analysts note that while Hezbollah remains a potent force, it has been significantly weakened by the 2024 war with Israel, leaving the extent of its current offensive capabilities uncertain.

This latest flare-up occurs against a backdrop of intense regional friction involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

International observers fear that the exchange could spiral into a broader conflict as all parties and their respective allies remain on high alert.
