Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has been killed in a plane crash in India.

According to the Indian news agency ANI, the aircraft crashed during an emergency landing attempt at Baramati Airport in Maharashtra.

The chartered plane had departed from Mumbai for regional Maharashtra on Wednesday morning. The crash occurred in Baramati at approximately 8:45 AM local time.

Citing preliminary information, ANI reported that Ajit Pawar, who also heads a faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), was traveling to Baramati to attend a public rally for the District Council (Zilla Parishad) elections.
