At least five students were killed when a student hostel building collapsed in the Satya Niketan area of India's capital, New Delhi. Another 15 to 20 people remain trapped beneath the rubble.

The six-story building, located near Delhi University's South Campus, collapsed around 1:30 PM on Sunday. Comprising a basement and five upper floors, the building was primarily used as a paying guest (PG) accommodation for students.

Hospital sources reported that four students were declared dead upon arrival at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), and another critically injured student died later.

Three additional students have been admitted to the hospital for treatment. One underwent surgery for hand and leg injuries, while another sustained minor injuries and was discharged after observation.

Rescue operations involving multiple government agencies continued into the night to search for an estimated 15 to 20 people trapped beneath the debris.

A senior official stated that the building—consisting of a basement and five upper floors—was being used as student PG lodging. Repair work was underway in the basement when the building collapsed around 1:30 PM.

An official from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) stated that two teams comprising 70 NDRF personnel and a dog squad have been deployed to search for survivors. Oxygen cylinders were also lowered into the debris to help trapped individuals breathe.

Local residents noted that most of the students staying at the hostel hailed from Kerala, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, and studied at nearby colleges.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over the incident and extended condolences to the families of the victims. He stated that authorities are working at the site and providing assistance to those affected by the building collapse.
