A car bomb attack at a security checkpoint in northwestern Pakistan has left 27 people dead, including soldiers, police officers, and the attackers.
Al Jazeera reported this information, citing the Pakistan Army.
According to the report, the attack was carried out under the cover of night on Thursday (July 23) in a remote area near the Afghan border, a region long active with armed groups. The dead include 12 soldiers, two police officers, and a forestry official, along with 12 attackers.
The attackers first attempted to breach the security checkpoint located in the Tank district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Subsequently, a vehicle packed with explosives rammed into the perimeter wall of the checkpoint.
Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), an armed group that has been fighting the Pakistani state since 2007, stated that four suicide bombers participated in the attack.
Authorities stated that search operations are underway in surrounding areas to track down others involved in the violence.
Attacks have increased significantly this year in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Previously, a series of attacks and suicide bombings targeted police officers in the neighboring Bannu district.
According to data from the Center for Research and Security Studies, the number of deaths from violence in Pakistan increased from 1,620 in 2024 to 2,331 last year.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Institute for Peace Studies reported that the number of attacks nationwide rose by 34% over the same period.
