A ferocious winter storm packing heavy snow and ice has brought much of the United States to a standstill, forcing the cancellation of approximately 13,000 flights and leaving vast regions without power.

The storm, which intensified on Saturday (January 24), has buried major highways under thick ice, severely disrupting travel and daily life.

In response to the escalating crisis, local authorities have declared a State of Emergency in at least 17 states and the District of Columbia.
