In a tragic attack in Fort Myers, Florida, a 48-year-old Bangladeshi woman named Nilufar Yasmin has been killed. The incident occurred on Thursday morning (April 2) at a gas station located on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Police arrested the assailant, 40-year-old Rolbert Joachin, shortly after the murder.
According to CCTV footage and witness accounts, the conflict began last Tuesday (March 31). Joachin reportedly failed to withdraw money from the ATM inside the gas station shop and demanded cash from the cashier, Nilufar Yasmin. When she explained that she was not responsible for the ATM machine, Joachin left in a rage, only to return early Thursday morning.
At 7:14 AM on Thursday, Joachin began by smashing the windshield of Nilufar’s personal car parked in front of the store with a hammer. When Nilufar stepped outside to intervene, Joachin shouted, "Give me my money," and struck her violently in the head with the hammer.
Members of the Fort Myers Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services arrived quickly and transported Nilufar to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead at 7:27 AM.
The Fort Myers Police Department confirmed that Rolbert Joachin was apprehended in the area of Mango and Raleigh Streets.
During the arrest, a temporary "lockdown" was issued for three local schools—Success Academy, the Young Parent Education Program, and James Stephens Elementary—to ensure public safety.
Joachin is currently held at the Lee County Jail on charges of murder and destruction of property. On Friday, a judge ordered him to be held without bond.
Nilufar Yasmin hailed from the Kushakhali Union of Chandraganj Upazila in Lakshmipur district, Bangladesh. She had joined the convenience store as a cashier just three months ago. She is survived by two daughters, aged 16 and 20.
