President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were evacuated on short notice following the sound of loud noises during a dinner at a hotel in the nation's capital.

The incident occurred Saturday local time at the Washington Hilton.

Reports from AFP, citing witnesses, suggest the sounds were believed to be gunshots.

According to a security official cited by the BBC, approximately seven to eight shots were fired. It remains unconfirmed whether a suspect has been killed or taken into custody.

A White House aide confirmed that the President is safe.

A photographer for Reuters reported hearing four to six loud bangs inside the hotel, though they noted the sounds did not appear to originate from the immediate vicinity of the dining area.

The President was attending a dinner with White House correspondents from various media outlets at the time.

Immediately following the noises, Secret Service agents secured the ballroom as guests were seen taking cover under tables.

Witnesses described Secret Service personnel swiftly ushering the President and First Lady out of the venue after they briefly took cover behind the stage.

Many of the 2,600 guests in attendance also sought safety as the situation unfolded.
