The suspect involved in the "shooting incident" during a dinner at a hotel in Washington, D.C., has been taken into custody. President Donald Trump confirmed the arrest himself via a post on his Truth Social platform.

The incident occurred Saturday night local time at the Washington Hilton, where President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were attending the annual dinner with White House correspondents.

During the high-profile event, sudden loud noises prompted Secret Service agents to immediately evacuate the President and First Lady to safety. Guests were also ushered out of the ballroom.

Shortly after the evacuation, Trump posted an update on Truth Social confirming the suspect's arrest.

"I told them we should continue the event, but we must follow the full instructions of law enforcement," Trump wrote. He added, "Whatever that decision may be, the evening is much different than planned, and we will have to do this again."

Citing a security official at the scene, the BBC reported that seven to eight gunshots were heard.

Witnesses described a scene of urgency as Secret Service agents rushed the Trumps behind the stage before exiting the venue. Many of the 2,600 guests sought cover under tables before eventually moving to secure locations.
