Amidst heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, US Vice President JD Vance has indicated that negotiations are moving forward, despite President Donald Trump’s recent rejection of Iran’s latest proposal. According to a report by Reuters, the Vice President shared these updates during a press briefing at the White House on Wednesday (May 13).

Vance noted that while discussions are progressing, the United States remains firm on its primary condition: Iran must be permanently prevented from developing nuclear weapons. "President Trump’s position on this is crystal clear," Vance told reporters. "We will not allow a nuclear-armed Iran."

The diplomatic landscape remains complex as both sides exchange demands. Iranian Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref recently claimed that Iran’s authority over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz is now an "established and settled matter." Iranian state media suggests that Tehran’s current focus is on consolidating security within its borders and the immediate region.

Adding to the dialogue, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that Tehran is prepared to reopen the Strait of Hormuz if the United States lifts its naval blockade and economic sanctions. He emphasized that the return of frozen assets and a cessation of hostilities are key prerequisites for de-escalating the current situation.
