One person was killed and five others were injured in a shooting in the downtown area of Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.

Among the injured are two police officers. CNN reported the information, citing officials. Following the attack, all six injured individuals were transported to Hennepin County Medical Center.

Hospital authorities later confirmed that one of them had died. Earlier, police stated that multiple people were casualties in the shooting, including two officers.

Following the incident, police urged the public to avoid 15 East Grant Street and the surrounding area.

Police received reports of the shooting around 5:45 PM local time. Dozens of police vehicles and a large contingent of officers were subsequently deployed to the scene, though pedestrian traffic around the area was not completely halted, according to CNN.

Several key establishments are located near the scene of the attack, including a residential building, the Minneapolis Convention Center, several hotels, and a hospital.

Out of security concerns, the nearby Minneapolis campus of the University of St. Thomas was also locked down.

A university spokesperson told CNN that the campus closure was decided as an extra precaution. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz stated that his public safety team was handling the situation, and state officials were present at the scene.

In a subsequent Facebook post, Walz expressed gratitude to law enforcement members working to ensure public safety in downtown Minneapolis.

Walz added that Minnesota prays for the emergency responders. Meanwhile, various U.S. federal agencies have also begun operating at the scene.

In a post, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) stated that its special agents were responding to reports of an active shooter in the area.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) also stated it was aware of the Minneapolis shooting, with agency personnel on-site assisting local law enforcement.

FBI Director Kash Patel said the FBI is aware of the shooting involving law enforcement personnel and will provide all necessary assistance to local authorities.
