In a major legal win for the BNP, candidates Aslam Chowdhury (Chattogram-4) and Sarwar Alamgir (Chattogram-2) have been cleared to contest the upcoming elections under the "Sheaf of Paddy" (Dhansher Shish) symbol.

On Tuesday (February 3), an Appellate Division bench led by the Chief Justice is set to formalize the orders. Lawyer Md. Mujibur Rahman confirmed the developments.

Chattogram-4: Aslam Chowdhury
The Supreme Court's Appellate Division addressed a petition filed by Yamuna Bank, which challenged the Election Commission's (EC) decision to validate Aslam Chowdhury’s candidacy despite allegations of being a loan defaulter.

The Background: The EC had previously declared his nomination valid. Yamuna Bank challenged this in the High Court, but the writ was dismissed.

Final Ruling: Following a lengthy hearing that concluded on February 1, the Appellate Division maintained that there are no remaining obstacles to his candidacy.

Chattogram-2 (Fatikchhari): Sarwar Alamgir
The High Court has stayed the earlier cancellation of Sarwar Alamgir’s candidacy, directing the authorities to allow him to participate in the election.

The Dispute: Initially cleared by the returning officer, Alamgir’s candidacy was later challenged by Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Md. Nurul Amin on loan default grounds.

The Reversal: On January 18, the Election Commission had cancelled his candidacy following an appeal hearing. However, Alamgir moved the High Court to reclaim his eligibility and successfully obtained a stay order.
