Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Tuesday that the government has approved the withdrawal of an additional 1,202 politically motivated cases.

These cases were filed against opposition leaders and activists during the 17-year tenure of the Awami League government.

The decision follows a rigorous review process designed to identify cases used specifically to suppress dissent and harass political figures.

According to an official media brief, this latest action brings the total number of withdrawn cases to 2,208, following an earlier approval of 1,006 similar filings.

Ministry sources confirmed that the withdrawal process will adhere to all established legal procedures.

Relevant authorities and public prosecutors have already been instructed to take the necessary steps within the court system to formalize these dismissals.

The government stated that this massive legal clearance is aimed at restoring public confidence in the judiciary, upholding democratic values, and ensuring that the legal system is no longer used as a tool for political retribution.

A local court on Tuesday ordered Maksuda Islam, the first wife of Satkhira-4 constituency Member of Parliament Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam, to be remanded in judicial custody regarding a case alleging her abetment in the suicide of his second wife, Mariam Khatun.  Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain issued the directive after law enforcement personnel presented Maksuda in court upon the conclusion of her one-day police remand, requesting her continued detention until the investigation concludes.  The court had granted a one-day remand for Maksuda and a four-day remand for Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam on September 21.
