The High Court on Sunday granted a high-powered task force an additional six months to conclude the investigation into the 2012 double murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi.
The bench, comprising Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Saiful Karim, issued the order directing the task force to submit its final probe report within this newly extended timeframe.
During the hearing, Advocate Mohammad Shishir Manir and Manzill Murshid moved to summon the investigation officer. However, the court noted that the task force had already submitted a progress report regarding the case.
Attorney General Md Ruhul Kuddus Kazal subsequently requested the six-month extension to file a comprehensive report.
In his address to the court, the Attorney General expressed deep frustration over the prolonged delay, describing the failure to submit a charge sheet even 14 years after the killings as “very painful.”
A Decade of Deadlines
The quest for justice has been marked by a series of legal shifts and extensions:
Sagar Sarowar, a news editor at Maasranga TV, and Meherun Runi, a senior reporter at ATN Bangla, were brutally murdered on February 11, 2012, in their rented residence in Dhaka’s West Rajabazar.
Their son, Mahir Sarowar Megh, who was only four-and-a-half years old at the time, was inside the apartment during the attack.
Following the murders, Runi’s brother, Naosher Alam, filed a case at the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. Despite the case’s high profile and national significance, a formal charge sheet has yet to be finalized.
