Former NCC Mayor Ivy Gets HC Bail in Two Murder Cases

The High Court on Thursday granted bail to former Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy in two separate murder cases filed in connection with the July 2024 mass-uprising.

The High Court bench, comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher, issued the order following the hearing of two separate bail petitions.

These specific cases were filed at the Siddhirganj Police Station in Narayanganj, involving the deaths of Selim Mondal and Abdus Salam during the mass protests last year.

Court records indicate that Ivy was formally shown arrested in these cases on March 2 and April 12 of this year.

In a related legal development, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has scheduled Sunday to deliver its order regarding the state’s appeals against Ivy’s bail in five other cases.

This date was fixed on Monday by the Appellate Division bench, led by senior justice Mohammad Ashfaqul Islam.

Previously, on February 26, the High Court had granted bail to the former mayor in those five cases. However, the state moved to the Appellate Division seeking a stay on those orders.

On March 5, the Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division stayed the High Court’s bail orders and referred the petitions to the full bench for further hearing.

Among these five cases, four are murder charges filed at Fatullah Police Station concerning the deaths of bus driver Abul Hossain Mizi, Abdur Rahman, Md Yasin, and Parvez during the July uprising.

The fifth case was filed at Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station on charges of assault and obstructing public servants. Ivy was shown arrested in these five cases on November 9 last year.

That same day, she had secured High Court bail in five additional cases, but the state again challenged the decision.

On November 12, the Chamber Judge stayed that bail as well, sending the matter to the regular bench where it remains pending.

Selina Hayat Ivy was originally picked up by law enforcement in the early hours of May 9 last year from her residence, ‘Chunka Kutir,’ in the Deobhog area of Narayanganj city, and has since been implicated in multiple legal proceedings.
