A Dhaka metropolitan court has granted a four-day remand for Satkhira-4 Member of Parliament Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam and a one-day remand for his first wife, Maksuda Islam, following a suicide abetment case filed over the death of the lawmaker's second wife, Mariam Khatun.

Delivering the ruling after police produced the accused and sought seven-day custodies, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam acted on charges brought this morning at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station by the victim's father, SM Masum Billah.

The filing names MP Nazrul Islam, Maksuda Islam, and Mariam's maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman—whom case records identify as directly instigating nineteen-year-old Mariam's June 2026 marriage to the lawmaker.

Police recovered Mariam's body suspended from a ceiling fan inside Flat 203 on the third floor of NAM Bhaban's Building 5 (opposite Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban) on the evening of September 20, leading to the immediate custody of the MP and his first wife.

Investigators note that Mariam resided with the couple while reporting ongoing physical and mental mistreatment since the wedding.

Complainant Masum Billah rushed to the residence after a 5:30 pm phone call from Nazrul Islam on September 20, discovering the body alongside a suicide note retrieved from the bed.
