The Durga Puja, the foremost religious festival for the Bengali Hindu community, will begin on Friday with the observance of Maha Shashti.
On this opening day of Maha Shashti, worshippers will conduct Bodhan—the traditional invocation and awakening of Goddess Durga—to formally initiate the grand festivities.
The primary religious rites will unfold on the subsequent day, with the tithi for Maha Saptami spanning across both Saturday and Sunday according to the Bangla calendar.
During Maha Saptami, priests and devotees will perform the Nabapatrika ritual, wherein nine distinct plants symbolizing various manifestations of the deity are ceremonially bathed and revered.
The festivities continue on Monday with Maha Ashtami, which highlights the sacred Sandhi Puja marking the exact junction between Ashtami and Navami.
The following day, Maha Navami, will encompass the final major devotional rituals alongside the ceremonial offering of 'bhog'.
On the ultimate day, known as Bisarjan, worshippers will bid adieu to Goddess Durga, carrying the idols in grand processions toward designated rivers, ponds, and water bodies for solemn immersion.
With merely two days remaining before the massive event, sculptors and craftsmen are applying final artistic touches to the idols as temples and temporary worship pavilions across the nation prepare to host the grand festival.
In response to long-standing appeals from the Hindu community, the government has officially expanded the executive holiday for Durga Puja to three days.
When combined with the standard Friday and Saturday weekend, this decision creates a continuous five-day recess running from October 20 to October 24.
Expressing appreciation, Basudeb Dhar, President of the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad, stated to BSS, "It's truly a positive decision. We thank the prime minister for such decision."
Across the country, temple management committees and pavilion organizers are putting the finishing touches on their festival arrangements, spanning pandaal construction, elaborate decorations, idol setup, decorative illumination, and planning for spiritual and cultural activities.
Simultaneously, administrative bodies and local citizens are collaborating to guarantee tight security and hassle-free transit for visitors throughout the event.
Carrying profound spiritual and cultural meaning for the nation's Hindu population, the festival marks Goddess Durga's conquest over the demon king Mahishasura, symbolizing the ultimate victory of righteousness over wickedness.
Mythological accounts hold that Mahishasura, rendered invincible against mortal men due to a divine boon, posed a direct threat to the heavens, prompting the gods to unite their cosmic energies to generate Goddess Durga, who subsequently engaged and vanquished the demon ruler.
Earlier on October 10, the holy occasion of Mahalaya, which signals the divine arrival of Goddess Durga, was commemorated with traditional rites across the country.
As the major event draws near, worship venues throughout Dhaka and regional districts are nearing completion with ornate themes, vivid lighting, and artistic display.
Large turnouts of worshippers and onlookers are anticipated to visit these venues throughout the celebration to offer prayers, accept sacred prasad, and enjoy cultural and religious shows.
Beyond its spiritual dimension, Durga Puja forms an integral part of Bangladesh's cultural fabric, uniting individuals of the Hindu faith alongside people from diverse religious backgrounds to reflect the nation's long-standing tradition of interfaith unity and peaceful co-existence.
To support the festival, the administration has instituted heightened security protocols, boosted state financial allocation, and granted extended leave.
Following instructions from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, state funding support for Durga Puja venues has been elevated from BDT 4 crore to BDT 5 crore.
The overall count of worship pavilions has expanded by nearly 1,500 over the prior year, reaching a total of 33,851 venues.
To reinforce surveillance during the festival, authorities will deploy a digital tracking mobile application originally instituted by the National Telecommunication Monitoring Center (NTMC).
This platform is designed to expedite real-time reporting of any suspicious activity, enabling swift security interventions to safeguard a harmonious and joyous setting.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Home Affairs has directed utility providers to guarantee uninterrupted power supply to all festival grounds.
Organizers have been instructed to maintain standby generator support around the clock, alongside emergency rechargeable lighting systems to mitigate any unexpected electrical or generator failures.
