Star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan last represented the national team against India in 2024. Since then, he has not been seen in the red-and-green jersey.
Legal complexities have prevented his return to Bangladesh; on one occasion, he traveled as far as Dubai in an attempt to return home before ultimately being forced to change his decision.
However, discussions regarding Shakib's return have gained fresh momentum.
On Saturday (February 21), Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Vice President Faruque Ahmed addressed the media, where the topic of Shakib's comeback took center stage.
BCB’s Stance on Shakib
Faruque Ahmed noted that efforts to bring Shakib back have been ongoing since he assumed his role.
"There is no doubt about Shakib's fitness and professionalism," Ahmed stated. "The Cricket Board always wants him to play for Bangladesh. Shakib is an asset and a brand for us. Selecting him based on his fitness is our responsibility, but the legal matters are being handled by the government. We hope for good news very soon."
On Central Contracts and the "A+" Category
The BCB also faced criticism recently for not including any cricketers in the top-tier "A+" category in the newly announced central contracts. Addressing this, Faruque Ahmed explained the shift in strategy.
"Previously, players like Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Shakib Al Hasan played regularly across all formats," he said.
"Currently, there are almost no players who are indispensable and regular in every single format. That is why the Operations Committee started with the 'A' grade instead of maintaining an 'A+' category."
The remarks from the BCB top brass reflect an optimistic outlook regarding Shakib's eventual return to the country and his future role within the national squad.
