South Africa dominated India in their first Super Eight match of the T20 World Cup, securing a massive 76-run victory.
After setting a challenging target of 188, the Proteas dismantled the Indian batting lineup, bowling them out for a mere 111 runs.
South Africa’s Recovery and Strong Finish
Opting to bat first after winning the toss, South Africa got off to a shaky start.
Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah struck early, dismissing Quinton de Kock for 6. By the fourth over, the Proteas were reeling at 20/3 as Aiden Markram (4) and Ryan Rickelton (7) also fell cheaply.
However, a resilient 97-run partnership between David Miller and Dewald Brevis turned the tide. Miller top-scored with a brilliant 63 off 35 balls (7 fours, 3 sixes), while Brevis added a quickfire 45 off 29 balls.
Towards the end, Tristan Stubbs played a crucial cameo, remaining unbeaten on 44 off just 24 deliveries, propelling South Africa to a formidable 187/7 in 20 overs.
For India, Jasprit Bumrah was the standout bowler, taking 3 wickets for just 15 runs in his 4 overs.
India’s Batting Collapse
Chasing 188, India’s innings never gained momentum. The Proteas' bowling attack, led by Marco Jansen, tore through the top order.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav and Washington Sundar attempted to stabilize the innings with a defensive approach, but both were sent back by bowling all-rounder Corbin Bosch.
While Shivam Dube (42 off 37) and Hardik Pandya tried to offer some late resistance, it was too little, too late. India’s tail failed to wag, with Rinku Singh and Jasprit Bumrah failing to trouble the scorers.
Bowling Stars
The South African bowlers were clinical:
Marco Jansen: 4 wickets (Player of the Match contender)
Keshav Maharaj: 3 wickets
This heavy defeat leaves India with significant work to do in their remaining Super Eight fixtures, while South Africa moves to the top of the table with a massive net run-rate boost.
