Brazilian forward Neymar Jr. has sparked widespread speculation about his future, admitting he may retire from professional football as early as December 2026.
The 34-year-old, currently playing for his boyhood club Santos, cited persistent injury struggles and the uncertainty of his physical condition as the primary reasons for his contemplation.
In an exclusive interview with the Brazilian online channel CazéTV on Friday (February 20), Neymar revealed that he is currently "living year by year" and focusing on his immediate recovery.
"I don't know what will happen from now on, I don't know about next year," Neymar stated.
A Career Defined by Records and Injuries
Neymar’s journey has been one of historic heights and physical setbacks:
Record Transfer: His 2017 move from Barcelona to PSG for £200 million remains the most expensive transfer in football history.
National Scorer: He is Brazil's all-time leading goalscorer with 79 goals, surpassing the legendary Pelé.
Injury Woes: After a stint with Saudi club Al-Hilal, he returned to Santos in 2025. However, a meniscus surgery in December 2025 sidelined him until just last week, when he returned to action in a 6-0 win over Velo Clube.
The World Cup Challenge
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching this June, Neymar acknowledged that securing a spot in the squad is his immediate priority but also a "massive challenge."
Brazil’s current head coach, Carlo Ancelotti, has maintained a strict policy that only players who are 100% physically fit will be considered for the tournament.
Neymar noted that while he aims to be fully ready for the World Cup in North America, his decision to continue beyond 2026 will depend on "what his heart says" at the end of the season.
