Lionel Messi continues to score and create, yet Inter Miami is struggling to find its rhythm in the current Major League Soccer (MLS) campaign.
The Argentine superstar inspired hope of a victory with a mesmerizing left-footed goal, but it wasn't enough; Miami had to settle for a 2-2 draw after conceding a late equalizer in stoppage time against Nashville SC.
Playing in a league match on Sunday (September 13), Miami suffered an early blow when Nashville’s Sam Surridge found the back of the net in the fourth minute from an Andy Najar pass.
However, Miami quickly equalized in the 19th minute courtesy of an own goal by opponent Reed Baker-Whiting. In the 27th minute, a powerful long-range effort from Messi deflected off a defender, leaving the score level at 1-1 by halftime.
After the break, Miami ramped up their attack, and Messi put his side ahead in the 62nd minute.
Receiving a pass from teammate Rodrigo De Paul, the forward wasted no time, firing a precise, angled left-footed shot past the Nashville goalkeeper on his first touch. This marked Messi's 19th goal of the current MLS season.
However, Miami's hopes of securing all three points were dashed in stoppage time. In the 91st minute, Sam Surridge netted his second goal of the match to bring Nashville level at 2-2, slipping away a victory that might have been secured had two of Messi's earlier brilliant attempts not bounced off the woodwork.
With this draw, Nashville extended their unbeaten run against Miami to four consecutive matches this season.
Meanwhile, they solidified their position at the top of the MLS Eastern Conference standings, moving 9 points clear of second-place Inter Miami.
