In a high-voltage English Premier League clash, Manchester City defeated the Red Devils with a 10-man squad, courtesy of a match-winning goal by Erling Haaland.
Manchester City suffered a major blow in the 23rd minute.
Tension flared on the pitch following a clash between Phil Foden and Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.
As both fell to the ground, Foden ended up lying over the ball.
While trying to clear the ball, Fernandes' leg made contact with Foden's back.
An angered Foden then kicked the United captain in the stomach.
Upon witnessing the incident, referee Michael Oliver brandished a straight red card to City's English forward.
Despite playing with 10 men, City continued to put up a fight. Their breakthrough came roughly an hour into the match.
From Josko Gvardiol's deflected cross, Erling Haaland slotted the ball into the back of the net with a brilliant finish at the far post.
However, the goal was shrouded in drama. The assistant referee initially ruled it out for offside.
Following a lengthy VAR review, the decision was overturned and the goal was validated. Haaland was narrowly kept onside due to the position of Patrick Dorgu.
Meanwhile, Enzo Fernandes—who was in an offside position—attempted a header but failed to make contact with the ball.
Consequently, the VAR review deemed him not to have interfered with active play.
Desperate for an equalizer after conceding, United launched wave after wave of attacks late in the game, but failed to break down City's resilient defense.
Manchester City ultimately walked off the pitch with a hard-fought 1-0 victory.
With this win, City has climbed to second in the league table with a maximum of 12 points from four matches, trailing Arsenal.
Meanwhile, Manchester United sits 13th with four points from one win, one draw, and two losses.
