Spain's rising star Lamine Yamal has created history by breaking a FIFA World Cup record previously held by Argentine football legend Lionel Messi. Scoring early in the match against Saudi Arabia, the Barcelona forward cemented his name as one of the youngest goalscorers in World Cup history.
Yamal found the back of the net in just the 10th minute of the match. At the time of his goal, he was 18 years and 343 days old, making him the eighth-youngest goalscorer in the history of the FIFA World Cup.
With this feat, he surpassed Messi, one of the greatest players of modern football. When Messi scored his first World Cup goal against Serbia and Montenegro in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, he was 18 years and 357 days old. Consequently, Yamal eclipsed the Argentine superstar by a margin of just 14 days.
Additionally, Yamal is now the second-youngest World Cup goalscorer in Spanish history, trailing only Gavi, who was 18 years and 110 days old when he scored against Costa Rica in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
However, the record for the youngest-ever World Cup goalscorer remains securely with Brazilian legend Pelé. He was just 17 years and 239 days old when he scored against Wales in the quarterfinals of the 1958 World Cup. He also remains the only footballer in World Cup history to score a goal before turning 18.
Meanwhile, in the match held in Atlanta, European champions Spain kept Saudi Arabia under pressure right from the kickoff. Following Yamal's record-breaking opener, Mikel Oyarzabal scored a brace to further solidify Spain's dominance, putting the Spaniards in complete control of the game.
