Portugal secured a commanding 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan, taking a massive step toward the knockout stage.
The only lingering regret for the Portuguese side was that Cristiano Ronaldo missed out on a hat-trick, despite multiple opportunities.
CR7 was unable to claim the second World Cup hat-trick of his career, but the night belonged to him regardless.
Portugal missed an early chance to break the deadlock just two minutes in. A ball delivered from the left flank by Bruno Fernandes was intercepted and cleared by an Uzbek defender inside the box.
Shortly after, Fernandes executed a brilliant turn near the penalty spot, but his deflected shot sailed inches over the crossbar.
In the fifth minute, a superb Portuguese attack handed Ronaldo a golden opportunity. Nuno Mendes floated an excellent cross from the left toward the far post, where Ronaldo found himself unmarked. However, he failed to make clean contact with the ball.
Ronaldo did not have to wait long for his historic moment, finding the back of the net in the sixth minute. With this goal, he became the first male footballer in history to score in six different World Cups.
Having missed chances in the opening match, the 41-year-old star expertly outmaneuvered defenders at the near post to meet a low cross from João Cancelo, firing a brilliant strike into the bottom corner. The stadium erupted as fans witnessed a truly historic milestone.
Portugal doubled their lead in the 17th minute when Nuno Mendes converted a free-kick with a low, left-footed strike to make it 2-0. In the 39th minute, Ronaldo struck again.
Latching onto a midfield pass from Fernandes, he drove into the box and unleashed a right-footed diagonal shot into the far corner, extending Portugal's lead to 3-0.
This marked Ronaldo's 10th career World Cup goal, surpassing the legendary Eusébio to become Portugal's all-time leading scorer in the tournament.
Uzbekistan briefly thought they had pulled one back when Gafurov scored an incredible long-range strike from outside the box to make it 3-1.
However, following a VAR review, the referee disallowed the goal after ruling that Cancelo had been fouled at the edge of the area during the buildup.
Ronaldo came agonizingly close to completing his hat-trick in first-half stoppage time. Meeting a low cross from Cancelo, he subtly chipped the ball over the rushing goalkeeper, only for Uzbek defender Khusanov to clear it directly off the goal line.
The intensity remained high after the break. In the 48th minute, João Félix unleashed a powerful, bullet-like shot from well outside the box, but his right-footed effort went just over the bar.
Three minutes later, the Uzbek goalkeeper stopped Ronaldo inside the box. Though the hat-trick-hungry star failed to score on that occasion, the flag was already up for offside.
Uzbekistan then caused a few scares for Portugal with back-to-back attacks. In the 52nd minute, Fayzullaev cut inside from the edge of the box and unleashed a curling right-footed effort, but Portuguese keeper Diogo Costa reacted well to safely gather the ball.
Two minutes later, Shukurov’s low, left-footed drive took a deflection off a defender and went just wide of the right post. Ronaldo then showed his defensive work rate, rising high to clear the resulting corner with a strong header.
Portugal extended their lead to 4-0 in the 60th minute. Bruno Fernandes delivered a sharp corner that found Félix, who executed a brilliant back-heel.
The ball took a bounce, struck Khusanov on the goal line, and was ultimately credited as an unfortunate own goal by goalkeeper Abduvokhid Nematov.
Ronaldo came close to his hat-trick on two more occasions. First, his left-footed strike toward the near post took a deflection and went out for a corner.
Later, he controlled a bouncing ball beautifully inside the area, but his half-volley was spectacularly denied by Nematov.
Uzbekistan had a rare second-half chance in the 77th minute when Shomurodov found space on the right side of the box, but his powerful half-volley flew high over the crossbar.
Immediately after coming off the bench, Rafael Leão made an impact, bursting down the left flank into the box, though a heavy touch allowed a defender to recover and clear.
Moments later, Fernandes let fly with a fierce 20-yard strike, forcing Nematov into a fine diving save to his right.
Four minutes after Vitinha joined the action, Leão added Portugal's fifth goal.
Nelson Semedo’s cutback was originally intended for Ronaldo, but after a deflection off an opposing defender failed to reach him, the ball fell perfectly to Leão, who smashed it home.
The 87th-minute strike capped off a dominant performance, sealing a 5-0 victory for Portugal.
