Sweden had an early opportunity. After that, however, they had no answers for what followed as France completely overwhelmed them with an onslaught of attacks.

Finding the back of the net twice, Kylian Mbappé celebrated a brace after a one-match gap. Didier Deschamps' side cruised into the World Cup Round of 16 following a clinical performance.

The two-time World Cup champions secured a comfortable 3-0 victory in the Round of 32 clash at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Bradley Barcola was the other goalscorer for France.

Before finally breaking the deadlock, France had a Kylian Mbappé goal disallowed for offside, hit the woodwork twice, and saw several shots shave past the goalposts.

The frustration of missing multiple chances despite relentless attacks finally ended in the 45th minute when Mbappé opened the scoring.

Receiving the ball on the left side of the box, he beat his marker with brilliant footwork before finding the far corner from close range.

He immediately ran over to console coach Didier Deschamps, who has been going through a difficult time following the loss of his mother.

France went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

Although Sweden created a few chances, they failed to truly test French goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

Mbappé made his first threatening run in the 17th minute, but his weak effort was easily gathered by the Swedish goalkeeper.

Three minutes later, Barcola fired a powerful shot over the crossbar. In the 21st minute, Mbappé latched onto a pass from Michael Olise and slotted it home, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Following a hydration break, Sweden goalkeeper Viktor Johansson (Zetterström) denied an effort from Adrien Rabiot.

In the 33rd minute, Mbappé nearly scored at the far post from an Olise pass, but his striking effort rattled the post.

A minute later, Rabiot fired another shot over the bar.

In the 37th minute, France came agonizingly close to a spectacular goal when an overhead kick struck the post, but Ousmane Dembélé failed to convert the rebound.

Two minutes before the interval, an Olise effort went just wide of the post before Mbappé finally broke the deadlock.

This marked his 17th career World Cup goal and his fifth of the current tournament, drawing him level with Norway's Erling Haaland.

Both trail the top scorer, Lionel Messi, by a single goal.
