Just hours after completing his £7.5 million (approx. $10 million) transfer from Aston Villa, Emiliano Martínez took to the field for Chelsea.

The 33-year-old Argentine goalkeeper conceded three goals on his debut, but it did not prevent Xabi Alonso's side from securing a win.

The Stamford Bridge club claimed an exciting 4-3 victory against Brighton.

Playing at home on Sunday (August 30), Chelsea played attacking football right from the start of the match. They found the back of the net in just the fourth minute.

While attempting to clear a ball from a corner, Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen and defender Mats Wieffer made a mistake.

Capitalizing on the opportunity, Roméo Lavia fired the ball home from close range to give Chelsea the lead. Following his arrival from Southampton in 2023, this marked his first goal for Chelsea.

In the 14th minute, Pedro Neto doubled the lead. Following a brilliant run by Morgan Rogers, the Portuguese winger sent the ball into Brighton’s net with a precise close-range finish from the pass provided. This was his first league goal since last December.

João Pedro scored Chelsea’s third goal in the 32nd minute. Controlling a pass from Jorrel Hato, the former Brighton player calmly scored from just six yards out.

After the goal, he celebrated with a thumbs-down gesture directed at the Brighton supporters.

However, tension returned to the match before the first half ended. In the 35th minute, after Martínez blocked an initial effort, Malick Yalcouyé scored a brilliant volley from the rebound to pull one back for Brighton.

The second half intensified with end-to-end attacks from both teams. In the 63rd minute, Pascal Groß's shot deflected off João Pedro, beating goalkeeper Martínez.

This reduced the margin to 3-2 and put Chelsea under pressure.

Nonetheless, Cole Palmer restored Chelsea's comfort with a fantastic goal in the 74th minute. He effectively secured the team's victory by sending the ball into Brighton's net with a precise shot from outside the box.

Although Groß scored another header in stoppage time, Brighton ultimately failed to equalize, and Chelsea left the pitch with a 4-3 win.

This marks Chelsea's third consecutive victory in their first three matches under Alonso. After defeating Fulham and Luton, they have now beaten Brighton.

Chelsea has scored a total of nine goals across these three matches, though defensive concerns remain, as opponents have breached their net four times in three games.

On September 6, Chelsea will play away against Premier League champions Arsenal, which will be Alonso's biggest test yet.

Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounding Enzo Fernández persists. Amid rumors of a move to Manchester City, the Argentine midfielder was absent for his second consecutive match.
